The chemical company Ineos Phenol has decided to reverse its intention to cut 56 jobs at the Doel site, management and unions reported on Thursday. The information and consultation phase provided for by the Renault law has been stopped.
At the end of June, Ineos Phenol announced a “future plan” including reducing staff by 30%, or 56 jobs out of 182. This reorganization of activities was intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the site, in a context of difficult market conditions with sharply falling demand. The announcement was not a big surprise for the unions because some of the staff had been on temporary unemployment for some time.
However, worker representatives are not reassured by management’s regarding-face. “The option of downsizing remains open, employees do not really feel at peace,” explains Levi Sollie of the socialist union ABVV.
“Announcing at the end of June that a third of the staff is threatened, and today announcing that the staff can still stay, this raises a lot of concern,” adds Geertje Troch, secretary of the Christian union ACV. He emphasizes that workers are demanding more certainty.
The abandonment of the restructuring appears to be the result of the impasse in discussions between management and the unions. “The board of directors of Ineos Phenol made this decision following an evaluation of the progress made in the realization of the future plan and the information and consultation phase,” explains Ineos spokesperson, Nathalie Meert. “There remains a need to move towards a profitable organization with reduced labor costs.”
