The chemical giant Ineos plans to invest 10 million euros in a hydrogen boiler which will be installed on the site of its subsidiary Inovyn in the port of Antwerp, the company announced on Wednesday.
The boiler will be able to recover its own excess hydrogen, via a process of electrolysis of water and salt. “Today, we have too few customers for our hydrogen,” explains the company’s subsidiary. “As we buy our steam from our neighbours, we can produce our own steam by burning hydrogen and thus cover 65% of our internal needs.”
Inovyn, which is one of Europe’s leading vinyl producers, recorded a turnover of 4.5 billion euros last year. The company will use its own hydrogen production to fuel the boiler. The launch of the project, which is scheduled for the end of 2024, “is completely independent of the recently discussed ethane cracker and Project One, for which the license has been withdrawn”, specifies the subsidiary.
