IV Pres. Knill received representatives of the Mercosur region Nelson Antonio Tabajara de Oliveira, Brazilian Ambassador – Exchange shows: Agreement is in the interests of both partners

Vienna (OTS) – In the run-up to the EU-Latin America summit in Brussels next week, Georg Knill, President of the Federation of Industrialists, invited the representative of the Mercosur region, Nelson Antonio Tabajara de Oliveira, Ambassador of Brazil, to the House of Industry to discuss the Discuss the potential of the trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur area.

“In view of the negative attitude of the Austrian National Council and the Federal Government towards the Association Agreement, we are pinning our hopes on new momentum at the forthcoming EU-Latin America summit in Brussels. With regard to the agreement, Austria is increasingly isolated in its undifferentiated blockade attitude within the European Union,” said Georg Knill, President of the Federation of Austrian Industry.

The Mercosur agreement is a unique opportunity to enter into a partnership on an equal footing and thus create a win-win situation for both parties, because both sides benefit economically and ecologically from increased cooperation. “The exchange has also clearly shown that both partners hope that the agreement will be concluded quickly,” said Knill, adding: “In view of the talks, the lack of understanding on the part of the export-oriented industry for Austria’s blockade and Europe’s hesitancy is great.”

The EU would be the first partner to conclude such an economic agreement with the Mercosur countries. The consequences would be a fair partnership at eye level and a significant increase in exports to the Mercosur region. The previous EU trade with the Mercosur region already secures 32,000 jobs in Austria. 1,400 domestic and 60,500 EU companies are active there. The trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur provides, among other things, for the reduction of 91 percent of the tariffs for European exports to Mercosur. After full implementation, the European Commission expects tariff savings for European exporters of 4 billion euros a year.
