COUNTRY Director of the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia Nirarta Samadhi said the industrial sector is one of the important sectors in efforts to accelerate the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target. This is stated in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target.
“Indonesia’s NDC target can still be optimized further and requires a more systematic, massive and structured approach. We believe that industry has the potential to be a key actor in reversing this situation,” he said at the Road to Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 event, Thursday (22/8).
He explained that in terms of environmental impact, the industry contributes to up to 34% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions nationally. The emission contribution is spread across the energy, waste and industrial process sectors and production use.
In addition, 42% of emissions from energy, which is the largest contributor to emissions in Indonesia, come from industrial activities and consumption. On the economic side, industrial activities contribute 41% of gross domestic product and employ 19.3 million people in 2023.

However, he continued, the industry is able to support the acceleration of the target. Because with its innovative, agile nature and exposure to global dynamics, the sustainability ambitions of the industrial sector can run faster when compared to other sectors.
“With these three potentials, it is very strategic to realize industrial decarbonization. This is not only vital to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also opens up great opportunities for sustainable economic growth and green job creation in Indonesia,” he added.
Meanwhile, Head of the Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry Andi Rizaldi said that according to the Enhanced NDC document, the emission reduction target has increased to 31.89% with its own efforts and 43.20% with international assistance. Of the emissions of around 400 million tons of CO2 equivalent produced in 2023 and 800 million tons of CO2 equivalent that could potentially occur in 2030, around 50% of them come from the manufacturing sector.
“Therefore, the Ministry of Industry is very confident and very optimistic that with support from various parties it can achieve this. net zero emission in 2050, while the national target is in 2060 or sooner,” said Andi.
To achieve this, his party has developed various initiatives including the creation of a decarbonization roadmap for 9 priority industrial subsectors. Likewise with the carbon trading roadmap, the formulation and issuance of green industry standards and the preparation of supporting policies for the decarbonization of the industrial sector. (N-2)
