Industry/Fez-Meknes: Mezzour creates synergy between the automotive and rail ecosystems

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, wants to synergize the automotive and rail ecosystems. This approach will improve the rate of integration of the national railway industry.

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, paid a visit last week to the industrial zones of Fez and Sefrou. During his visit to the industrial zone of the former Cotef de Fez, the minister called on business leaders to be more competitive and innovative.

“With a rental price of 5 DH per m², you must be more competitive,” he said. Recalling that the lots located in the ex-Cotef area are made available to rental investors.

During his visit to the Alstom factory, the minister noticed that several parts used in Alstom’s production line, including connectors, are imported from abroad, while similar items are manufactured in Kenitra in the automotive ecosystem.

“We can work to synergize the automotive and rail ecosystems, especially since there is a great resemblance in the manufacturing process of the two ecosystems”, Mezzour told Nourddine Rhalmi, CEO of Alstom Morocco, during his visit to the factory in Fez.

Initially, Alstom will be able to use, according to its needs, part of the production chain of the automotive ecosystem, pending the integration of imported parts into the national rail ecosystem.

To overcome the difficulties related to certifications and patents, the minister asked Alstom officials to dissect the components of the imported parts to facilitate their comparison with those of the automobile. In this context, the minister said that his department will take care of the necessary legal arrangements and certifications.

This will allow Alstom to strengthen industrial sovereignty, which is a mixture of security, in particular of value chains, of industrial influence to have access to markets, to value resources more and not to commodify them. Same observation for certain cardboard packaging which are imported by the Maroc Modis company, while the Minister indicated that they were originally manufactured in Tangier.

Covering an area of 3.4 ha, the Alstom-Fès site currently employs some 400 people and expects to create 350 direct jobs by 2023. The site, which is committed to supporting the socio-economic development of region, has to date equipped more than 20 international railway projects.

Subsequently, the Minister visited the Maroc Modis-Triumph International company, also located in the former COTEF area and dedicated to the manufacture of lingerie, before going to the sites of the Ain Cheggag Industrial Park (PIAC ) and the International Exhibition Center of Fez. The objective is to inquire regarding the progress of the work of these two projects.
