The Committee of Ministers finally approved the construction of a new industrial waste plant in the Metropolitan Region, specifically in the commune of Tiltil, which will prevent the waste produced in Santiago, and in practically the entire country, from being transferred to the landfill located in Chillán Viejo.

The news gave peace of mind to the historic commune, which for some time had been managing through its authorities to avoid becoming the repository of garbage at the national level.

“We were in a fight with the support of deputy Cristóbal Martínez, who has been very aware of what was going to happen with Tiltil. The Committee of Ministers finally met. We were expectant, because it is public knowledge, and it has already happened in other regions such as Biobío, that in the end the garbage that Hidronor does not collect in its province reaches the commune of Chillán Viejo. Here we had the same fear, but this was a much higher volume, and furthermore, what was going to reach Chillán Viejo was the waste from large mining, a situation that had us on alert, even on the verge of starting mobilizations,” he said. the mayor, Jorge Del Pozo.

According to the community leader, there were more than 2,500 companies whose industrial waste, if Tiltil had not been opened, would have reached here.

“We are convinced that at least on this occasion, the waste from the Metropolitan Region will no longer reach the commune of Chillán Viejo and the region of Ñuble,” highlighted Del Pozo.

“A precedent is set”

It was in 2023 when local authorities began to warn that if the Tiltil project was rejected, the only landfill in the entire country – which from 2028 would be available to receive industrial waste – would be that of Ñuble, which threatened turn the region into a new sacrifice zone.

Last year, deputy Cristóbal Martínez (UDI), accompanied by the mayor of Chillán Viejo, Jorge del Pozo, met with the Minister of the Environment, Maisa Rojas, who promised to hold an inter-ministerial session to address a solution to the problem. posed.

“This is very good news for Ñuble, and especially for all the residents of Chillán Viejo. On Thursday the Committee of Ministers met, and the landfill in the commune of Tiltil, in the Metropolitan Region, for industrial waste was approved. If it had been rejected, the second option was to transfer all that waste to the landfill in the Ñuble region located in Chillán Viejo. We were working hard with Mayor Del Pozo, we were with the minister, we had expressed the situation and the concern in the Chamber of Deputies, so we are very happy,” he said.

The legislator stated that “that was the reasonable decision on the part of the ministers, because each region must take responsibility for its waste. We at Ñuble do not have to receive all this industrial waste from the Metropolitan Region. So an important precedent is also set for the rest of the regions, so that they can take charge of their waste and household waste.”
