A Brazilian industrial production presented a slight drop in January 2023, registering a retraction of 0.2% in the national scenario, as pointed out by the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on April 6th. However, the Northeast region of the country showed a different performance, with an average increase of 6.1% in industrial production.
The study also revealed that there was a decline in industrial production in eight states in the first month of 2023, with the greatest negative results observed in Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%), São Paulo (3.1%) and Mato Grosso (2 %). Other states that presented decrease were Rio de Janeiro (1%), Santa Catarina (1%), Pará (0.4%), Paraná (0.3%) and Bahia (0.2%).
The IBGE attributed part of this retraction to the common practice of collective vacations in the automobile industry in January, which results in a drop in production. In addition, the shortage of inputs and the higher price of raw materials have had an impact on the pace of production, generating caution in the sector.
Industry plays a crucial role in the development of Brazil, being responsible for generating jobs, moving the economy and stimulating technological innovation. The growth of industrial production in the Northeast, therefore, is an important indicator that the region is developing and contributing to the national economy.
