The wheat challenge
Indonesia has so far attempted to appear neutral in the conflict, refraining last February from condemning Russia as an aggressor state.
But Jakarta also depends on the import of Ukrainian wheat, blocked by the Russians in the Black Sea. Indonesians are already affected by the increase in certain foodstuffs and fear a food crisis. This is no doubt also why President Widodo is mobilizing and trying to mediate in the Ukrainian conflict.
