DENPASAR, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police announced Tuesday the arrest of three Mexican nationals over an alleged robbery on the resort island of Bali in which a Turkish tourist suffered serious injuries.
The arrests were made on Saturday in a villa in the town of Ungasan, in the Balinese district of Badung, where the Mexicans had been staying since December 7 as tourists, explained police spokesman Jansen Avitus Panjaitan.
The three arrested and a fourth Mexican citizen broke into a nearby villa in the popular tourist enclave of Kuta last week following pointing a gun at a security guard and forcing him to surrender, the spokesman added.
The four men, armed with three pistols, shot at several guests, who ran out of the villa to safety. The suspects stole US dollars and Indonesian currency worth regarding $5,900 from the village and shot a 39-year-old Turkish man in the stomach, left hand and side, police said.
The suspects planned the robbery by preparing weapons and guarding the residence, according to authorities.
Surveillance camera footage and witness accounts led police to the four Mexican suspects. Although one is still being sought, the other four were presented at a press conference wearing orange clothing and shackles.
