POPE Francis will leave a trace of tolerance by attaching his personal memories to the Polyhedron or in Indonesian called Hati Indonesia. The mosaic was built specifically to welcome the arrival of Pope Francis, a symbol of an inclusive Indonesian society.

The initiative to build the mosaic came from Scholas Occurrentes, an institution under the auspices of the Vatican, which came to Indonesia thanks to the collaboration and full support of the 5P Global Movement.

“This artwork represents the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, involving a total of 1,500 contributors. The contributors are students from a character-building program in Jakarta, workshop participants in Bali, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo, and residents from three correctional institutions,” said Global President of Scholas Occurrentes José María del Corral.

José said that each side of the Hati Indonesia mosaic tells the story of the contributors, a combination of education, art, and technology. They also donated personal items and helped produce pieces of the artwork installation. The combination of the artworks implies a sacred shared community, where Indonesia’s diversity resides.

“The Heart of Indonesia symbolizes how each individual contributes to the global community becoming more alive and meaningful. It is also a reflection of the richness of Indonesia’s cultural diversity,” he said.

Mosaik Hati Indonesia consists of 137 triangular art installation pieces. There is a door that adults can pass through, and inside the mosaic are globes and personal memories of each contributor.

The mosaic construction uses three types of materials, from natural elements, fabric elements, and recycled elements. This is in line with the environmental message of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si and Laudato Deum.

These materials were carefully selected to reflect a commitment to caring for the shared home and addressing climate challenges.

On the sidelines of his visit on Wednesday (4/9) to the Cathedral Church, Pope Francis plans to visit the Heart of Indonesia. Just like the contributors, the highest leader of the Catholic Church will place a piece of his personal memory on one side of the Heart of Indonesia and enter through the door into the mosaic.

“Pope Francis entered the hearts of Indonesia, united with the Indonesian community and motto which, although diverse, is so strong in seeking brotherhood and peace,” said José.
