Indonesian Citizens in the UK and Ireland Attend the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day Ceremony at Wisma Nusantara London

Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony at the Indonesian Embassy in London (MI/HO)

A solemn atmosphere was felt at the 79th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence Commemoration Ceremony at the Indonesian Embassy in London.

Taking place at Wisma Nusantara, the flag-raising ceremony was led by the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization Desra Percaya. Acting as the ceremony commander was Major Pnb Yusuf Atmaraga, who is currently on a study assignment in England.

A total of 16 members of the Indonesian Embassy in London’s Flag Raising Team were on duty at the ceremony which started at 10.00 local time.

Having undergone training since July, Lily Estelita Liana, one of the troop members, expressed her feelings after completing her duty as a Flagbearer.

“I am proud, happy, and very pleased to have the opportunity to experience being a flag-raising team leader in London,” said Lily, who is the 2014 Indonesian Tourism Princess who is currently studying at University College London.

After a series of ceremonies, the tumpeng was cut as a sign of gratitude for the gift of independence for the Indonesian nation.

On that occasion, the Indonesian Embassy in London expressed its appreciation to representatives of PPLN London and Panwaslu London for their contribution in overseeing the smooth implementation of the 2024 Election in London.

This year’s August 17th, which fell on a weekend, added to the enthusiasm of the invitees to attend the ceremony.

Around 200 invitees from Bank Indonesia, state-owned enterprises, students and the Indonesian diaspora from various cities in the UK and Ireland attended the event.

The year 2024 also coincides with 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the UK, and 40 years of Indonesia and Ireland.

Ambassador Desra said that the Indonesian Independence Day is also a momentum for improving bilateral relations with the two countries.

“With the spirit of Advanced Indonesia, we hope that partnerships in strategic sectors with both countries can continue to be strengthened,” he said.

To enliven the celebration of the 79th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, the Indonesian Embassy in London is holding a series of activities throughout August, namely the Instagram Photo Competition, Virtual Quiz Competition for the 17th of August and as the peak of the celebration, the People’s Party event on 24 August.

The People’s Party is an annual event during the celebration of independence. Last year, the event was attended by more than 2,000 visitors.

The 2024 People’s Party will be filled with a bazaar of Indonesian food and products from Indonesian MSMEs in England, traditional games typical of the 17th, art and cultural performances and is planned to be enlivened by artists from Indonesia, Melly Lee and Ridwan Naibaho. (Z-1)
