The Indonesian boccia team has managed to amaze various countries around the world by making history through an extraordinary debut at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, bringing home four medals.
Indonesia‘s journey in the boccia event began with Gischa Zayana winning a bronze medal in the women’s individual BC2 event. Not long after, a big surprise came from Muhamed Afrizal Syafa, who surprisingly defeated the main favorite athlete from England, David Smith, in the bronze medal match in the men’s individual BC1 event.
Smith, a gold medallist at the previous Paralympics, acknowledged Afrizal’s superiority in the match.
“If I didn’t laugh, I would probably cry,” Smith said after being defeated by Afrizal in the bronze medal match, as reported by Antara.
Muhammad Bintang Satria Herlangga’s move further strengthened Indonesia’s dominance in this branch. Bintang managed to reach the final in the men’s individual BC2 event before finally having to admit the superiority of Thai boccia legend Worawut Saengampa and taking home the silver medal.
However, the biggest achievement of the Indonesian team came in the mixed team BC1/BC2 event. Syafa and Zayana joined Felix Ardi Yudha to compete in the team event. In the quarter-finals, they dramatically eliminated the strong team from England, the gold medalists of the Beijing 2008 Paralympics, with a 7-7 draw and secured victory in extra time.

This victory advanced them to the semifinals, where they defeated Japan, the bronze medalists at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, by a landslide 9-0.
“We can’t believe what we’ve achieved in a week,” Yudha said after the semifinals. “We’ve already won three medals, and the fourth is already confirmed. All this happened in just seven days. This is a historic moment for Indonesian boccia.”
In the final, Indonesia faced China in a fierce match that ended with a score of 7-6, leaving Indonesia to settle for the silver medal. However, Yudha is optimistic that his team can learn from this experience to achieve better results in the future.

“If I look back and analyze our performance, I think this is our weakness. We played with courage, but that’s where we lost the chance to win gold,” said Yudha.
“We have learned a lot from this final and how China played. In the next Paralympics, we will try to use this experience to win gold.”
Afrizal also has high hopes for the future of Indonesian boccia.
“Winning bronze and silver in our country’s first appearance in the Paralympics is an amazing result. However, I hope to give better results for Indonesia in the next Paralympics. I dedicate this medal to the Indonesian boccia family and my parents who always pray for me,” said Afrizal. (Z-6)
