STAFF Expert of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) for Technology, Industry and the Environment, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, believes that Indonesia is capable of leading the 10th World Water Forum meeting to produce important and concrete agreements to safeguard the sustainability of water and the global environment. This is because the meeting, apart from being attended by several heads of state, former world leaders have also stated that they will attend Bali, where the 10th World Water Forum will be held. These include former President of Chile, former President of Hungary, former President of Slovenia, former President of Malawi, former President of Sri Lanka, former President of Costa Rica, former Prime Minister (PM) of Belgium, former PM of Korea, and former PM of Butan.

“They are not just anyone. This shows the importance of the meeting. To this day, we together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continue to make efforts to ensure as many world leaders attend as possible,” said Endra, Saturday (20/4/2024), in Jakarta.

Indonesia’s success in encouraging water governance through a local cultural approach is believed to be an attraction for world leaders to attend the forum which will be held on 18-25 May 2024. The many good practices that Indonesia has implemented are considered as an advantage of the meeting which involved all stakeholders in water governance. The world can learn a lot from what Indonesia has done.

“For example, the Subak system in Bali which has been recognized by UNESCO in irrigation management through local wisdom or Lake Bratan which is also in Bali. We have often seen the Community Forest Park (Tahura) which shows how important mangroves are in supporting water management. These are all “a good example that can be directly witnessed by world leaders and delegates,” said Endra.

Endra considers the presence of media coverage from within and outside the country to be an important component that not only contributes to the success of the event, but more importantly can be a bridge to disseminate the importance of water management for the sustainability of life in the future. “We hope that the media can also help with various interesting things, not only from the forum side but also from the other side of good examples. Later we will specifically invite journalists to see firsthand real examples of water management carried out by Indonesia. In essence, we want the media to also play an active role in conveying “There are many good examples of water governance that have been implemented from Indonesia to the world,” he added.

The 10th World Water Forum carries the big theme Water for Shared Prosperity. The meeting of world leaders will later raise and discuss water issues as well as find joint solutions to water management problems. This forum will produce a Ministerial Declaration as the main output accompanied by concrete deliverables (projects, initiatives, joint actions). This forum consists of three main processes, namely the political process, regional process and thematic process.

Indonesia brought four proposals in the Ministerial Declaration (MD), namely the establishment of a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE); mainstreaming Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on Small Islands; and the establishment of World Lake Day (WLD). In addition, it will also include in the MD Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions (Compendium) as an initiative for concrete follow-up to WWF10. In particular, there are three things that are Indonesia’s mission to agree on at the meeting in Bali, namely the first Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience, mainstream integrated water management in small islands, and routine World Lake Days activities.

The opening of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali will be held at Kura-Kura Bali which will be wrapped in an event entitled Balinese Water Purification Ceremony. Next, the Welcoming Gala Dinner at GWK Cultural Park will be held on Sunday. On Monday, May 20 2024, at BICC, Nusa Dua, an Opening Ceremony and High-Level Meeting was held which was immediately followed by interface meetings with those responsible for political, thematic and regional processes, as well as bilateral meetings with several heads of state.

After the Opening Ceremony, the opening of the Fair and Expo was immediately held at the Nusa Dua BNDCC Hall. Fair and Expo locations are spread across BNDCC, BICC and Kuta Beach. Political, thematic and regional process sessions will be held on 20-25 May 2024. Meanwhile, specifically for High-Level Meetings and Ministerial Meetings, they will be held on 20-21 May 2024. Located at Taman Bhagawan, on Friday, 24 May 2024, they will be held Cultural Night (Farewell).
