Indonesian President Joko Widodo received an official state visit from Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister James Marape to the Presidential Palace in Bogor, West Java, Monday (15/7). James Marape and his state entourage arrived at 10:00 WIB.
At the Joint Press Conference, the President said the two countries continued bilateral cooperation, including in electricity, health, transportation and education. Jokowi said the visit showed the increasingly close brotherhood between Indonesia and PNG.
In the meeting, the two discussed several things, such as the implementation of the defense cooperation agreement, which is very important for strengthening the security of both countries.
The Head of State also reiterated the importance of continuing discussions on the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to increase trade between the two countries.
“Regarding the construction of the electricity network by PLN on the Skouw-Wutung border, I can say that this cooperation started today and electricity has been turned on in Wutung today,” said Jokowi.
Skouw Village is located in Muara Tami District, Jayapura Regency, Indonesia. Meanwhile, Wutung Village is located in Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea.

In addition, Indonesia has also committed to supporting the development of PNG and other Pacific countries. Various grant programs have been carried out and are still ongoing, such as the renovation of hospitals in Port Moresby, the construction of public facilities in West Sepik.
“Regarding cooperation in the Pacific region, PNG as a close neighbor and strategic partner of Indonesia, Indonesia appreciates and continues to expect PNG’s support in increasing cooperation with the Pacific, including the MSG (Melanesian Spearhead Group) and PIF (Pacific Islands Forum),” said Jokowi.
Previously, Indonesia has also provided assistance to people affected by landslides in PNG. Jokowi hopes that this step can ease the burden of affected residents. (Z-11)
