JAKARTA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) — Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, said on Friday that it had successfully transported passengers on a commercial flight that used jet fuel mixed with palm oil.
The Boeing 737-800NG plane with more than 100 people on board took off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten Province on Friday to Adi Sumarmo International Airport in Central Java, regarding 550 km away.
Garuda Indonesia CEO Irfan Setiaputra said at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport: “This is the first time. After conducting a successful trial, we used biofuel on a commercial flight.”
The alternative jet fuel is produced by the state-owned Indonesian energy company PT Pertamina. Indonesia conducted its first test flight with a similar type of fuel in 2021.
As the world’s largest palm oil producer, the Southeast Asian country is making efforts to expand the use of biofuels to reduce its fuel imports.
