The Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wamenlu) Muhammad Anis Matta invited the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League to be able to strengthen the position of Palestinian pro-independence groups, by fostering better cooperation with the Global South or Southern countries.
“This similarity in fate and history is an important point in gathering further support from the Global South,” said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anis Matta while leading the Indonesian Delegation at the Preparatory Meeting for the OIC and Arab League Summit, in Riyadh.
This is inseparable from the similarities in the history of Southern countries, which were generally former colonies and became independent through struggle.

Led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anis Matta, the Indonesian Delegation at the Extraordinary Summit Preparatory Meeting conveyed a number of inputs such as the need for more concrete action and not just negotiating a declaration.
Indonesia’s suggestions have also been echoed by many other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine and Türkiye.
The Extraordinary Summit was held on November 11 2024, to discuss concrete actions to stop the war and realize Palestinian independence. As an independent country through the struggle against colonialism, Indonesia will always be with the Palestinian people.
“Indonesia’s commitment to the Palestinian struggle will never fade, because we know how painful it is to be a colonized nation,” concluded the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs during the meeting. (Fer/P-3)

**Interview with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Anis Matta on Supporting Palestine**
**Editor**: Thank you for joining us, Deputy Minister Anis Matta. Recently, you invited the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League to strengthen support for Palestinian pro-independence groups. What prompted this initiative?
**Anis Matta**: Thank you for having me. Our initiative stems from a longstanding commitment to justice and peace for the Palestinian people. As we are witnessing increasing instability in the region, it is more important than ever for Islamic countries to unite and provide stronger advocacy for Palestinian rights.
**Editor**: In what ways do you envision the OIC and Arab League enhancing support for these groups?
**Anis Matta**: We believe that fostering better cooperation amongst member states can lead to a more coordinated voice on the international stage. This could include diplomatic support, humanitarian aid, and promoting Palestinian issues in global forums to ensure they receive the attention and action they deserve.
**Editor**: How has Indonesia’s position historically influenced its role in advocating for Palestine?
**Anis Matta**: Indonesia has been a steadfast supporter of Palestinian rights since our independence. Our unique position as the largest Muslim-majority country drives our commitment, not just in rhetoric but in action as well. We aim to demonstrate solidarity and provide a platform that amplifies Palestinian voices.
**Editor**: What challenges do you anticipate in rallying support from other nations in this effort?
**Anis Matta**: One significant challenge is the differing political agendas of member states. However, we aim to focus on our shared commitment to human rights and justice. Building a collective strategy based on these principles can help us overcome these divides.
**Editor**: what message would you like to convey to the international community regarding Palestine?
**Anis Matta**: I urge the international community to look beyond political affiliations and recognize the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. We must work together to advocate for peace, ensure humanitarian assistance, and foster an environment conducive to achieving a lasting resolution to this conflict.
**Editor**: Thank you, Deputy Minister Matta, for your insights and for your commitment to this vital cause.
