Indonesia: Deadly floods with at least 15 dead

At least 15 people died, while 115 were taken to safe places, as announced today by the disaster management service of Indonesia, after the floods and landslides caused by the heavy rains in South Sulawesi.

Landslides triggered by heavy rains hit Luvu district in South Sulawesi early yesterday (local time), disaster management agency (BNPB) spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a statement.

“In total, 14 residents died due to floods and landslides in Luvu, South Sulawesi province,” he said.

More than 100 houses were severely damaged and 42 were swept away, while four arterial roads and a bridge were damaged, according to the same source.

More than 100 people moved to mosques or the homes of their relatives as authorities tried to evacuate more than 1,300 affected families.

In another area of ​​South Sulawesi province, at least one person died and two others were injured in yesterday’s floods, the BNPB spokesman said in another statement.

In Indonesia, several landslides occur during the rainy season, and the phenomenon has been exacerbated in some areas by deforestation.
