Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi asked countries in the world to immediately recognize the State of Palestine as an important step towards a two-state solution.

Retno made this request at the Ministerial Level Meeting on the Situation in Gaza and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, Thursday (26/9).

“Recognition of the State of Palestine is very important. Why? Because this gives hope to the Palestinian Nation. And most importantly, this is the only way to put political pressure on Israel to stop its atrocities,” he said.

However, according to Retno, several countries she invited actually stated that they would only recognize Palestine at the right time.

“When is the right time? For me, the right time is right now. The right time is now. We don’t have to wait until all the Palestinians have fled and 100 thousand people have been killed to say that this is the right time,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs. confirm.

In another session, before the Ministerial Meeting to Support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Indonesia reaffirmed its full support for the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees.

“It is difficult to imagine what the humanitarian situation (in Palestine) would be like today, if there were no UNRWA on the ground,” said Retno. According to Retno, the two main things to support UNRWA are political support and funding support.

Political support is needed to ensure that UNRWA is not influenced by political pressure, because threatening UNRWA is the same as threatening humanity. Meanwhile, for funding support, Indonesia has provided a concrete example by doubling its annual contribution to UNRWA by 2024. (Ant/Z-2)
