The communication ministers of Malaysia and Indonesia agreed on Friday to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of cybersecurity and telecommunications.
During a meeting in Jakarta, the Malaysian Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Annuar Musa, and his Indonesian counterpart, Johnny Gerard Plate, discussed various issues relating to cybersecurity and the digital space in their countries and within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, pledging to strengthen their cooperation on these different aspects.
“National security should be the priority in the face of rapid technological progress,” Annuar Musa stressed in a joint press conference following the meeting, adding that he discussed with his Indonesian counterpart various issues relating to the strengthening the legal framework for cybersecurity, telecommunications infrastructure, satellite technology and online narratives.

For his part, Johnny Gerard Plate said that he shared with his Malaysian counterpart “the same understanding regarding the protection of the digital space in Indonesia, Malaysia, as well as within ASEAN, in order to make this space clean and useful for the communities”.
The two parties also agreed to develop closer cooperation in international fora, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations development agency specializing in information and communication technologies. .
This is the third meeting between the two senior officials in the past six months, the last having taken place in Singapore.
