Indigenous Case of Dengue Fever in Perpignan: Investigation Reveals Seven Additional Infected People

On September 6, the Regional Health Agency announced the detection of an indigenous case of dengue fever in the West Cemetery and Avenue d’Espagne sectors in Perpignan. An investigation led to the discovery of seven other infected people.

At the beginning of September 2023, a person affected by dengue fever was identified in Perpignan. Particularity: she had not traveled to an area where the virus is circulating, and this was the first indigenous case in Occitania since the start of the surveillance season, on May 1, by the Regional Health Agency.

This discovery led ARS Occitanie and Public Health France to investigate on September 8 in the neighborhood, namely the West Cemetery and Avenue d’Espagne sectors. Investigation which led to the identification of seven other infected people. Other suspected cases are still being identified. Their condition does not cause concern.

Several mosquito control operations

Dengue is a disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito, following the bite of an infected person. The symptoms resemble those of the flu, namely high fever, joint pain and severe headache. Several mosquito control operations therefore took place in the sectors concerned, namely on September 7, then on September 14 and 19 for renewal.

These operations aim to destroy all mosquitoes established near the living spaces of the people concerned, to eliminate possibly contaminated tiger mosquitoes. All residents of this area who present clinical signs suggestive of a dengue infection are urged to consult their doctor.
