India’s trade ministry has recommended anti-dumping duties on imports of aluminium foil from China as exports surge to account for nearly a third of the country’s market despite ample domestic production capacity.

The recommendations, contained in a report released by the ministry late on Friday and submitted to the government for approval, are aimed at addressing threats to the domestic manufacturing sector, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies said in the report.

The EU proposed tariffs of $619 to $873 per tonne on aluminium foil up to 80 microns thick, with an exception for foil below 5.5 microns for non-capacitor applications.

Aluminum foil is widely used as a packaging material to preserve and keep edible products fresh.
