India’s Top 4 Batsmen Rethink Their Strategy after Devastating Loss in the Test Championship Final

Continually The ‘credit’ goes to India’s batsmen, especially the top 4, as they came back from losing the second Test Championship final. The main reason for India’s defeat in this final is the miserable performance of the top 4 batsmen namely Captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Chetveshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli.

Despite batting 4 innings each in the 2 Test Championship finals, all 4 of them failed to score a single half-century. Yesterday Virat Kohli’s 49 runs was the highest score among the top 4 Indian batsmen in the Test Championship final! Devon Conway (54) and Kane Williamson (52*) in the top four scored half-centuries in the first and second innings respectively as New Zealand won the first Test Championship final.

Australia scored a strong first innings score in this final on the strength of Steve Smith’s century (121). Going into the final with a weak middle order and an even weaker tail end, India’s hopes were on the top 4 batsmen. Chasing a target of 444 runs in the 4th innings, India was convinced that it was almost impossible to win.

However, the possibility of a draw was still not far off. But there was no effort from their side. While Rohit got out for trying an unnecessary sweep shot, Pujara’s wicket was taken for an attempt at an upper cut that he had never ‘played’ in his career. Kohli was also sent back to chase innocuous balls outside the off-stump and lose wickets.
