India’s rivers and air quality are seriously polluted. Recently, the Yamuna River, one of the tributaries of the Ganges, has been covered with a large amount of white poisonous foam (picture shows the pollution situation in 2021). (Photo/AP)

In addition to the famous monument Taj Mahal, India is also world-famous for its environmental pollution. Recently, the Ganges River, which is regarded as sacred, has been covered with white foam mixed with toxic substances due to the discharge of industrial wastewater. The scene is quite shocking.

According to CNN, this toxic white foam is a mixture of sewage and industrial waste that formed in parts of the Yamuna River (a tributary of the Ganges), which flows from the Himalayas through several states. Experts point out that this irritating foam contains a large amount of ammonia and phosphate, which may cause damage to the respiratory system and skin. More than 20 million residents of New Delhi, the capital of India, have become sick, and some people have been forced to Primary schools and corporate accounts are temporarily closed.

In addition to the Yamuna River in New Delhi, similar contamination also occurred in the canals of Tamil Nadu Province in the south. Strong winds blew a large amount of foam onto the road, seriously affecting driving safety.

Due to New Delhi’s high population density and the large amount of garbage produced, the Yamuna River is the most seriously polluted. According to the government monitoring committee, only 2% of the river flows through the capital, but it is responsible for regarding 76% of the river’s total pollution; despite the toxic foam on the river, many villagers downstream continue to use the river water to bathe and even drink. It may cause a greater public health crisis.

In addition, according to data from Swiss air quality company IQAir, New Delhi has been rated as the most polluted city in the world for several consecutive days; on the 9th, the city’s air quality index (AQI) was 517, which is a dangerous level. Garda and Mumbai are both ranked among the 20 most polluted cities in the world by IQAir, with air quality trees of 205 and 102 respectively, placing them in the unhealthy air quality range.
