Four people, including the attacker, died Sunday night at a shopping center in Indiana following a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court before being killed by a civilian, police said.

The individual entered Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines and began shooting at diners, Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said at a news conference.

An armed civilian killed the man, Ison said. In total, four people died and two were injured.

Police responded to the mall around 6 p.m. to respond to reports of a shooting. Authorities were checking the place for more victims, but believe the shooting was limited to the food court.

Police seized a suspicious backpack that was found in a bathroom near the area, Ison said.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and several other agencies are assisting in the investigation.

“We are disgusted that there is another incident of this type in our country,” said Chris Bailey, deputy chief of the Indianapolis police.

There is no active threat in the area and police have at least one suspect, he added.

Authorities said they would release more details Sunday night.
