An Indiana deputy sheriff was killed Tuesday night by a pit bull-like dog while trying to protect her 8-year-old son.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that Tamieka White, 46, was killed around 7:45 p.m. by a dog that was in her home. The animal also inflicted injuries on her son, but his life was not threatened.
“She died last night protecting the most important person in her life,” Ms. White’s commanding officer, Brittany Seligman, told local media.
It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected & tragic passing of one of our own, Dep. Tamieka White. Dep. White was a courageous & dedicated public servant, having worked with our agency since 2007.

Authorities say the dog was shot and killed by an Indianapolis police officer called in. The animal would have charged towards the patrollers, forcing them to open fire.
The dog did not belong to Mrs. White, but to another person whose identity has not been released by the police. The circumstances that led the hound to attack Tamieka White and her son also remain unclear.
Tamieka White had worked for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years. “She was a beacon to everyone, and will be missed by all who knew her. We will work tirelessly to honor his memory,” commented the sheriff’s office.
