Ranchi: The Indian women’s hockey team’s Olympic hopes were dashed following they lost to Japan in the bronze medal match in the Olympic qualifying round. The Indian team is out without qualifying for the Paris Olympics with the loss. The defeat of the Indian team was by an uncontested goal.

The team that made history by winning the fourth place in the Tokyo Olympics has missed the qualification for the next Olympics. The last time India failed to qualify for the Olympics was in 2012.

Japan’s goal was scored by Kana Urata from a penalty corner in the sixth minute of the match. The Indian team was doomed to return in despair as the Japanese defense blocked all the Indian team’s attempts to fight back.

A win once morest Japan was inevitable for the Indian team, which had fought once morest the strong Germany in the semi-finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament the previous day. India lost 4-3 in the penalty shootout. Both the teams scored two goals each and the match went to a shootout.
