Indian woman arrested for ‘throwing son’ in crocodile-infested drain

Police in India say they have arrested a woman who allegedly threw her disabled six-year-old son into a canal infested with crocodiles after an argument with her husband.

The mutilated body of a child who was hearing and speech impaired was recovered from a canal in Uttarakhand district of the Indian state of Karnataka on Sunday.

A local police officer told Hindustan Times that the woman, Savitri, 32, has accused her 36-year-old husband Ravi Kumar of forcing her to kill the child. Kumar has also been arrested.

The woman said that her husband considered the son a burden and they often quarreled about it.

Police Inspector Krishna Barakiri told the newspaper that Savitri allegedly threw her son into a dirty drain connected to a crocodile-infested black river at 9 pm after an argument over the same issue escalated on Saturday night.

Savitri said that her husband subjected her to mental torture and asked her to throw the child in the canal.

“My husband is responsible,” the woman reportedly told the police. They kept saying let the son die and he only eats. I would say leave it at that. If my husband keeps saying this, how much pain can my son bear? Where shall I go to share my pain?’

Police sent divers to search for the boy after neighbors raised concerns, but the search operation had to wait until the next day as it was already dark.

The police said that the child’s body was found in the jaws of the crocodile and was pulled out after the crocodile caught it. The child had severe injuries, bite marks on his body and his right arm was missing.

The domestic worker and her husband, who works as a mason, were later arrested for the murder, police said.
