Indian Students Abroad: Deaths, Repatriation, and Government Assistance

New Delhi: 403 Indian students have died abroad in the last five years due to reasons including firing and civil unrest. After Shreyas Reddy, a student from Hyderabad, was found dead in Ohio in the US on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs released an account in the Rajya Sabha.

Canada has seen the highest number of Indian students die in five years (91). UK (48), Russia (40), Australia (35), US (36), Ukraine (21), Germany (20), Cyprus (14), Italy (10) and the Philippines (10) are the countries with the highest number of deaths. The Ministry of External Affairs has released a list of 34 countries. Causes of death include accident, natural death, health problems, murder, etc.

23,906 people were brought back

Due to unexpected developments such as civil unrest, war and epidemics, the central government brought back 23,906 students from foreign countries to India in a period of three years. Kerala is the state where the maximum number of students have returned. 3636 students were brought back in three years. Uttar Pradesh (2862), Tamil Nadu (1854), Gujarat (1546), Haryana (1503), Maharashtra (1470), Bihar (1402), Karnataka (1072) and Rajasthan (1054) are next.

Missions post for help and security

The Ministry informed that through portals like Missions-Post and Madad, the necessary assistance is being provided to the students who are going for higher education abroad. Information regarding universities, academic and living facilities will be made available to students on request through Missions-Post. In case of emergencies, the Ministry arranges food, medicine, accommodation and arrangements to return to India. Help can be requested over the phone or in person, through e-mail, and through social media, the ministry said.
