Indian Prime Minister mourns singing legend Lata Mangeshkar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the death of Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s greatest cultural icons and singer who has defined music and melodies for generations.

Mangeshkar’s cause of death has not been announced at the age of 92.

Mangeshkar was taken to hospital on January 11 following she was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Mangeshkar began her singing career in her teens and for 73 years, during which she sang more than 15,000 songs in thirty-six languages, she was dubbed “The Nightingale”.

Modi said on Twitter: “I feel an indescribable sadness.”

“The kind and affectionate Lata Didi has left us,” he added. It will leave an irreparable void in our country. She will be remembered by future generations as a champion of Indian culture, and her courageous voice had an unparalleled ability to wow people.”
