Bengaluru: Two-time World Under-20 Championship medalist Indian female athlete Priya Mohan is suffering from a rare lung disease. Priya, who is from Karnataka, underwent an emergency surgery at the Bellary hospital yesterday. With this, it is certain that Priya will not be able to participate in the Asian Games to be held in Huangzhou, China in September.

Priya, who won gold in the 400m Open Nationals earlier this season with a time of 53.55 seconds, improved her time in the subsequent Federation Cup with a time of 53.40 seconds. Priya was hospitalized last week during the National Inter-State Championship. The disease was diagnosed during further tests and surgery was performed.

Priya was a member of the Indian 4-400m mixed relay team that won silver in the 2020 U-20 World Championships and bronze in 2021. J.S.W. Priya was training in Bellary with sponsorship. Cuban Anir Garcia, who won gold in the 2000 Olympics, is the coach. After qualifying for the Asian Games, Priya is all set to train abroad. Those dreams were shattered by an unexpected illness. Priya and the coach now hope to be able to compete in the Olympics in Paris in 2024 following recovering from the disease.
