Indian actress under fire for recommending alternative treatment

Indian actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu was accused of spreading false medical information when she Instagram shared a post in support of alternative treatments for viral infections.

Samantha, who has acted in Tamil and Telugu language films for over a decade and has 3.5 crore followers on Instagram, shared a picture of herself using hydrogen peroxide nebulisation.

In her post, which has now been deleted, the actress wrote: ‘Consider trying an alternative treatment before taking medication for a common viral.’

He added: ‘One option is to nebulize with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and distilled water. It works like magic. Avoid unnecessary use of tablets.’

Doctors criticized this post and said that hydrogen peroxide can damage the lungs.

Dr Cyriac Abby Phillips, who runs an account under the name ‘Da Liver Doctor’, called Samantha Prabhu ‘medically uneducated’ for posting false medical information online, leading to a heated exchange between the two.

Sharing several studies on the dangers of nebulizing with hydrogen peroxide, Dr. Phillips said the actress should be charged and fined or jailed for endangering public health.

In response, Samantha Prabhu said in a detailed three-page statement on her Instagram that she shared the information with ‘good intentions’ and did not intend to harm anyone.

He also defended himself by saying that his doctor with 25 years of experience had prescribed it to him.

Samantha Prabhu said that she was diagnosed with myositis and that immunotherapy and alternative therapies helped her.

Other doctors say that hydrogen peroxide can cause oxidative stress in the lungs and possibly respiratory problems.

Dr Retuja Ogalmgale of Mumbai’s Wockard Hospital told Hindustan Times: ‘Both hydrogen peroxide and distilled water nebulisation have potential risks.

‘Hydrogen peroxide is generally not recommended for nebulization because it can cause oxidative stress, mucus irritation and other serious respiratory problems.’

Indian Badminton player Jwala Gutta also commented on the matter and wrote: ‘I just have a question for this celebrity (Samantha Prabhu) who is recommending this treatment to her large number of followers.

‘I understand their intention is to help, but only if the treatment doesn’t help and causes death, would you still take responsibility for it? Will the doctor you tagged also take responsibility for this?’
