Cape Town: India started with a win in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. India women won their first win of the tournament by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets. Pakistan won the toss and batted first, setting a target of 150 runs for India. But the Indian team achieved the victory by making the second highest run chase in the Women’s T20 World Cup tournament. Jamima Rodriguez’s innings of 53 runs gave India an easy victory.

Batting first, Pakistan captain Bisma Maroof’s half-century helped India set a target of 150 runs. Bisma and middle-order player Ayesha Naseem led Pakistan to 149 runs from 68 for four. The Pakistani heroine scored an unbeaten 68 off 55 balls. Ayesha Naseem scored 43 runs in 25 balls and gave great support to the Pakistani heroine. Radha Yadav and Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each for India.

In reply, India slowly chased the runs, but the dismissal of opener Yastika Bhatia in the sixth over raised some pressure. Then Shafali Verma and Jamima led India to victory. Shafali scored 38 runs and captain Harmapreet Kaur returned to the dressing room with 16 runs. But in the fourth wicket partnership with Richa Ghosh, Jamima batted modestly and brought India to the winning target. India hit fours in the last overs and won with one over to spare. Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal took the wickets for Pakistan.
With the win, India moved to the second position in the Group B points table. England beat West Indies and reached the first position on the back of net run rate. India’s next match in the tournament is on Wednesday, February 15. Opponents are West Indies. Apart from Pakistan, England and West Indies, India’s other opponents in Group B are Ireland.
