Loki Ferguson
New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson says there are no worries about New Zealand’s World Cup semi-final against India in Mumbai on Wednesday because ‘we will all be starting from scratch again.’
Tournament hosts India have been the best team in the 10-team event, winning all nine of their group matches. They are looking for their third World Cup title and second on home soil after victory in the 2011 final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.
In contrast, New Zealand won their first four matches of the round-robin stage and lost the next four matches.

The Black Caps are yet to win a Men’s One Day International Cup but have proved to be the best performers in the tournament. This team has reached the finals in both 2015 and 2019. Wednesday’s match is their ninth semi-final match in the tournament’s 13-edition history.
“I think we’ve had a few games where we’ve lost after a tough fight,” Ferguson told reporters at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Monday. In the rain-affected match, New Zealand was defeated by Pakistan through DLS method despite scoring more than 400 runs.
He added: ‘But I think these nine games have put us in this position and we’re all starting from zero again. So it will be a good challenge on Wednesday.’
India have defeated several opponents to reach the semi-final match played at captain Rohit Sharma’s home ground.
But they had to work hard for a four-wicket win against New Zealand, with Daryl Mitchell scoring 130 in an innings of 273 runs. In reply, India scored 274 runs for the loss of six wickets with two overs remaining.
If in-form fast bowler Mohammad Shami had not taken five wickets for 54 runs, New Zealand could have scored more than 300 runs.
Ferguson, who played alongside Shami in Indian Premier League team Gujarat, described India’s bowling as strong.
But Ferguson, who leads New Zealand’s bowling averages with 10 wickets under 24, said: ‘I think the knockout stage (Australia and South Africa) face each other in the second semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday. All four teams have a very good fast attack and good spinners.
He added that the competition (against India) was tough.
He said that one has to face many ups and downs while playing against India. It won’t make any difference to the game. We just have to fight as hard as we can.
Four years ago, New Zealand defeated India by just 18 runs in the two-day Manchester semi-final due to rain in the World Cup held in England four years ago.
“I’ve never played an ODI for more than two days, not even in the title,” said Ferguson, 32.
“It was very exciting for us at the time but four years on,” he said, “we’ve played a lot of cricket in between and I’m sure both teams are looking forward to Wednesday.”
