India-US Defense Cooperation Roadmap: Reducing Dependence on Russian Arms

In the wake of tensions between Beijing and Washington, New Delhi is seeking to reduce its dependence on Russian arms and has sealed a roadmap with the United States for their cooperation in the military-industrial field.

Following his visit to the Indian capital, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the two countries have “established an ambitious new roadmap for defense industrial cooperation that will accelerate priority co-development and co-production projects”.

According to the US Department of Defense, the agreement should make it possible to accelerate technological cooperation and co-production, in particular in air combat and land mobility systems, the “submarine domain” and intelligence, surveillance and the gratitude. This initiative might give India access to cutting-edge American technologies and support its own defense modernization plans.

India and Russia are longtime allies, and Moscow is by far New Delhi’s main arms supplier. Today, India, which has never condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, seeks to end this dependence in the military field, both by expanding and diversifying its sources of import of weapons and increasing its national production.

Western countries including the United States and France are negotiating multi-billion dollar deals with India and diplomats say New Delhi attaches great importance to technology transfer as part of any deal with Western countries.

India’s increased security cooperation with these countries despite its former defense ties with Russia from where it also imports oil, has placed New Delhi in a delicate diplomatic posture.
