The United Nations predicts that India will overtake China to become the world’s most populous country by the end of this year.
In the ‘2023 World Population Status Report’ released on the 19th, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under the United Nations predicted that the population of India would reach 1.4286 billion in the middle of this year, 2.9 million more than China.
The report said, however, that India has not conducted a census since 2011, so it is impossible to calculate an exact date when India will overtake China.
According to World Bank data, India’s population is young, fertility rates are high, and infant mortality rates have declined over the past 30 years.
Currently, India’s 15-24 year old population is estimated to be around 254 million.
On the other hand, China is experiencing an aging population and slowing population growth.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin responded to the UNFPA report on the 19th that “talent is as important as population.”
Spokesman Wang said at a regular briefing that day, stressing that “a country’s population effect depends not only on quantity but also on quality.”
In addition, China’s demographic effect has not disappeared, and its development potential is still strong, he said.
