India, the world’s largest rice exporter, may restrict some exports due to tight domestic supplies. A person familiar with the matter said. Global food markets might be further disrupted.

The Indian government is discussing export restrictions on broken rice, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. A decision might be announced soon.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Food and Industry declined to comment. A request for comment from the Ministry of Finance has not yet been received.

India accounts for 40% of the world’s rice trade, and any restrictions on India’s exports would not only hurt the country’s rising cost of living, it would also lead to worsening hunger.
