India: Suspect found – Minor arrested for bomb threats on Indian airliners

This month Indian airlines received a series of threats to their domestic and international flights on social media, all of which turned out to be hoaxes.

“We strongly condemn the recent bomb threats against Indian airlines. We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that all necessary measures are taken against such actions,” Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, the country’s civil aviation minister, wrote to X yesterday.

He said the arrested person is a minor, meaning under 18, and did not name him.

Local media reported that bomb threats were made through an X account and reported that two IndiGo flights – one bound for Muscat and the other Jeddah – and an Air India bound for New York were carrying gunmen who they brought explosives.

At least eight IndiGo flights also received threats.

Three of Spicejet, two of Vistara and four of Air India also received similar threats, according to Reuters calculations.

Air India said its flight from New Delhi to Chicago was forced to make an emergency landing in Canada yesterday after a “security threat posted online”. The passengers were then flown to their destination by a Canadian Air Force aircraft.

The government plans to beef up security on its international flights by deploying armed but plainclothes police, according to India’s Economic Times newspaper.

The interior and aviation ministries did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
