India plans to be a major player in the global wheat market

India is preparing to take ambitious measures in the coming weeks to try to establish the country as a dominant exporter in the market, two government sources said. Wheat high-quality, while importers scramble for supplies in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer following China, is seeking export deals, taking advantage of excess stocks at home and a sharp increase in global prices.

It sees disruptions from the war between Russia, the world’s largest wheat exporter, and Ukraine, another major supplier, as an opportunity to sell its wheat on the world market.

Although it has surplus wheat stocks, logistical bottlenecks and quality concerns have hampered India’s past efforts to sell large quantities on the global market.

Exports accelerated last year to 6.12 million tons, from 1.12 million tons a year earlier.
