India Moves Up in Global Gender Equality Index: Key Findings and Rankings

New Delhi: India has improved its position in the Global Gender Equality Index released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) this year. India is ranked 127th in the list of 146 countries. Compared to last year, it has moved up eight places. 1.4 percentage points. Last year it was ranked 135th.

For the 14th year in a row, Iceland is the number one country for gender equality. The position of neighboring countries in the index is Pakistan 142, Bangladesh 59, China 107, Nepal 116, Sri Lanka 115 and Bhutan 103.

The report says that the country has achieved parity in all levels of education. Equality in wages and income has increased, but the share of women in senior positions and technical roles has declined. India recorded 25.3 percent parity in political empowerment. At the same time, no country has yet achieved full gender equality and WEF estimates that it will take 131 years.

The report was prepared considering the factors of participation and opportunities in the economic sector, access to education, political empowerment and health welfare.
