NEW DELHI (AP) — India launched its first space mission to study the Sun on Saturday, less than two weeks following a successful uncrewed landing near the moon’s south polar region.
The Aditya-L1 capsule took off aboard a satellite launch vehicle from the Sriharikota space center, in the south of the country, on a mission that aims to study the sun from a point located regarding 1.5 million kilometers ( 930,000 miles) from Earth.
The spacecraft is equipped with seven payloads to study the solar corona, chromosphere, photosphere and solar winds, the Indian Space Research Agency explained.
On August 23, India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole, a historic journey into uncharted territory that scientists say might hold vital reserves of frozen water. After a failed attempt to land on the moon in 2019, India joined the United States, the former Soviet Union and China as the fourth country to achieve the milestone.
