The government of India is investigating notifications sent by Apple to several members of the opposition in the country. A Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In)a state cybersecurity agency, confirmed the information.

The agency also reported that it notified the company regarding the matter — previously, it had only been invited to collaborate “with real and accurate information”. When contacted, the Cupertino giant said it had no additional comment on the case.

This is because, in fact, she had already responded to the opposition’s allegations, mentioning the possibility that these threat alerts were false positives and that not all attacks would be detected. However, Apple did not reveal the origin of the notifications.

Earlier this week, opposition party leaders reported receiving notifications from Apple regarding “state-sponsored attacks” on their iPhones. The Indian government also raised concerns and sought clarification.

The Indian Minister of Communications and Technology, Ashwini Vaishnawdefended the government, accusing the opposition of distracting from the progress led by Narendra Modi. He reinforced the country’s commitment to the privacy and security of its citizens.

The ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances and origins of the threat notifications sent by Apple. It is therefore expected that the company will commit to cooperating with the authorities in investigating the facts and that everything will be clarified.
