India: Elephant speared to death in ‘revenge’ mob attack

The elephant died shortly after being attacked by locals in the Jhargram district of the eastern state of West Bengal on Thursday, officials said, raising questions about the growing conflict between humans and elephants.

Wildlife activists and animal rights organizations in India have condemned the incident and the death of the elephant.

Wildlife activist Prerna Singh Bandra, who in 2018 challenged the use of fireballs to control wild animals in India’s Supreme Court, said, “This (measure) law (wild (Life Protection) Act, 1972 is against The Indian Supreme Court has put a complete ban on throwing fireballs to drive away elephants, however important, I petition.’

He added: ‘We claim to protect elephants, to worship them – but we cannot give them a place to live, we cannot give them a place physically or in our hearts. ‘
