JOHANNESBURG (Archyde.com) – Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Cavatra said Prime Minister Modi held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in South Africa. India’s Line of Actual Control (LAC) border issue.

Vinay Kwatra also said that Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping agreed to “instruct relevant officials to work harder to quickly resolve the standoff and de-escalate the situation”.

Relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors have been strained for more than three years following Chinese and Indian troops clashed on the Himalayan border in June 2020, killing 24 people.

While the nearly 3,000-kilometre border has remained largely calm, the two countries have continued to face off in several areas.

Cavatra said that Modi emphasized to Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit “India’s concerns regarding unresolved issues along the Line of Actual Control.”

Modi also “emphasized that peace and tranquility in the border area, as well as observance and respect of the Line of Actual Control, are indispensable for the normalization of India-China relations,” Cavatra said.

This is the first time Modi has directly raised the matter with Xi Jinping, and he reiterated the position that other Indian ministers have expressed to China on many occasions.

The Indian government recently said Modi interacted with Xi on the sidelines of last year’s G20 summit in Indonesia, but it was merely a polite greeting and a discussion of the need to stabilize relations between the two countries. Central News Agency (Translation)
