A senior police officer told The Indian Express that RTI (Right to Information Movement) activists Guru Waghmare used to threaten and extort money from spa owners in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Similarly, they also harassed spa owners in neighboring states, leading to FIRs and 22 cases requiring warrants for their arrest.
Waghmare allegedly extorted extortion from Shrikar while Ansari’s spa was closed after a raid in 2023.
Police said that Ansari had refused to give money to Waghmare after which he lodged a complaint with the police following which the raid was conducted.
Police say the two spa owners decided to work together and allegedly hired a hitman named Saqib from the Indian capital, Delhi, and offered him 400,000 Indian rupees (£3,712) for the murder.
CCTV footage from the spa as well as the restaurant helped police trace the events.
Police found two men who tried to hide their identities by wearing raincoats.
The two men followed Waghmare from the restaurant to the bar, but were also seen stopping to buy something from a small shop nearby.
Investigation revealed that the payment was made to the hitman through UPI (Instant Payment System) and the account linked to the payment belonged to Ansari. Police managed to reach Ansari’s house where he allegedly confessed to the crime and named his accomplices.
Saqib, who left the city by train on the night of the murder, was arrested at a station in Kota, a city in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. Along with them, two other persons have also been arrested on suspicion.
