India: A man who went to the hospital for a check-up was stuck in an elevator for two days

India Southern state of Kerala A man who was trapped in a hospital elevator for two days was finally pulled out.

Ravindran Nair, 59, went missing with his family to a hospital in Kerala on Saturday.

He was evacuated on Monday following spending the last two days of the week in an elevator at the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Three hospital employees have been suspended for negligence, the Kerala Health Department said on Monday.

Nair had gone to the hospital for a check-up with his wife but got stuck in the lift while returning.

Police said that they boarded the lift to go to the first floor but they claim that the lift came down and did not open. They called for help but no one came. His phone was also switched off.’

The lift was reportedly stuck between two floors and Nair’s phone fell and broke while trying to call for help in the chaos, police added.

They pressed the elevator’s alarm button and called emergency numbers but got no response.

“I tried to call all the emergency numbers listed inside the lift but got no response,” Nair told state-run news agency Press Trust of India. I also raised the alarm but no one came. After some time I realized that it was the second Saturday of the month (holiday in India) and the next day was Sunday and then I waited for help.’

Nair said he had forgotten to estimate the time inside the lift and an operator came for routine work on Monday morning.

He said: ‘We pushed the door open from both sides and I jumped out.’

Nair’s family filed a missing case on Sunday following he did not return home.

His son Harishankar said that his father was affected by the tragedy.

State Health Minister Veena George has asked the hospital administration to investigate the incident.

Veena George wrote on Facebook: ‘The Director of the Medical Education Department has been directed to investigate the case of the patient trapped in the lift at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College OP Block.’

In 2023, a nine-year-old boy died following getting stuck in the elevator doors in a residential complex in the capital Delhi. The elevator went up with the boy trapped between the doors and crushed him.
