INDI provides air conditioner to school in the Xákmok Kásek community

Asunción, IP Agency.- By express instructions of the president of the Paraguayan Indigenous Institute (INDI), Juan Ramón Benegas, and in compliance with the request of Judge Rodrigo Mudrovitsch, Vice President of the Inter-American Court, during the visit to indigenous communities last week, the proceeding was immediately to the installation of an air conditioning unit in the mobile classroom provided by the MEC to the Xákmok Kásek community of the Sanapaná town.

In this way, INDI, as the governing body in charge of ensuring the rights of indigenous peoples, reaffirms its commitment to the promotion and defense of the rights of indigenous communities. This action is part of the institution’s continuous efforts to guarantee dignified and adequate conditions for the education of the indigenous peoples of Paraguay.

Xákmok Kásek (“many parrots” or “parrot nest” or “little birds’ nest”) is made up of groups from Sanapaná and has about 300 people, located about 380 km from the capital on the PY09 Transchaco Route.

MEC resolution aimed at respecting the culture and tradition of indigenous communities

Following this same line, the Minister of Education, Luis Ramírez, had signed Resolution No. 1461 on September 16, 2024, with which he complies with the provisions of the Inter-American Court, providing the school of these communities, the materials and human resources necessary for the proper education of students, respecting the culture and traditions of these native peoples.

“It is a demonstration, in which all types of resources that can be allocated to indigenous communities with a ruling in the Inter-American Court are prioritized; Likewise, the administrative processes that are internal inconveniences regarding calls for bids,” said Sonia Melissa Díaz, general director of Human Rights of the MEC.

“Today, the exception is being tried to be regularized in order to specifically comply with the Yakye Axa community, which has the claim in the ruling for the construction of toilets. Two bathrooms for boys and two bathrooms for girls will be built, as well as a tank and a water tower that will facilitate their use,” explained the MEC professional.
