From November 1, owners of low-energy-performance housing located in Wallonia will once more be able to index their rent, said regional Housing Minister Christophe Collignon on Thursday, confirming information from Litter.
Since October 2022, only the rents of accommodation displaying a PEB A, B or C certificate can be fully indexed, the other PEBs imposing limited or outright prohibited indexation (for PEB F and G).
“The objective of this measure was social. We wanted to protect people who lived in poorly insulated housing, by limiting the disproportionate indexation of their rent, while the health index was experiencing an exceptional increase linked to energy prices, in the context of the war in Ukraine” , explained Minister Collignon (PS).
“From the moment the cyclical element disappears, we return to the ordinary regime. Today, we returned to normal indices. There is therefore no longer any reason to maintain an exceptional situation. It needed social corrective action, but it also needed to be fair to landlords,” he added.
“We experienced a particular situation which led to an exceptional measure. This might be reactivated if the situation got out of hand once more, ”assured Christophe Collignon.
