About the authors
Dr. Holger Schmenk
Dr. Holger Schmenk, born in 1978, is a metal fan and has a doctorate in historians. The title of his dissertation is “Xanten in the 19th century. A Rhenish city between tradition and modernity” (2008). In addition to other publications in his field such as “The early medieval memorial books of the Lake Constance area” (2003) and “From contaminated sites to industrial culture. Structural change in the Ruhr area using the example of the Altenberg zinc factory” (2009) was written by Dr. Schmenk also wrote didactic books, including “Popular Music in History Classes” (January 2024). His musical passion is heavy metal. Together with his wife Nicole, Dr. Schmenk founded his own publishing house, which published band biographies of Tankard, Subway To Sally and Scott Ian, among others. He is also a leading author of all three volumes of “Kumpels in Kutten 3: Heavy Metal in the Ruhr Area”. As the director of a cooperative comprehensive school in Hesse, Holger Schmenk’s full-time job now leads 1,400 students from elementary school to high school.
Andreas Schiffmann (MA)
Andreas Schiffmann, born in 1981, studied English and German, is a literary translator and music journalist and works for the magazine Rock Hard, among others.
