Index – Sport – Fernando Alonso: The FIA made a gross mistake at the Hungaroring

According to the Aston Martin driver, he lost his chance to improve his lap time because qualifying was interrupted too soon after the accident of Juki Cúnoda at the end of Q3.

Alonso had almost completed his fast lap when the Japanese driver badly smashed his car accelerating out of turn five. Practice was immediately interrupted, which meant that several drivers, including Alonso, were unable to complete their final laps.

“The truth is that sometimes the FIA makes good decisions and sometimes it makes gross mistakes. Now, unfortunately, it was an example of the latter,” the Spaniard told DAZN television.

They started waving the red flags when I was in the last corner, which is surprising. I was not close to the accident, in such cases they almost always wait for the pilots to finish their fast lap. That’s the unwritten rule. I was one and a half tenths of a second faster than my previous lap when practice was interrupted with a red flag

he explained Alonso, why did he get out of his car angrily.

Returning to the pits, he and teammate Lance Stroll were directed to the “parc fermé” area, which Alonso also did not understand. After the FIA realized the mistake, both Aston Martin drivers were allowed to return to their garages to join the others at the restart.

This did not really matter to the Spaniard, as he had no more fresh tires left, this interlude did not affect his starting position. Alonso is seventh, while Stroll can start the 70-lap race at the Hungaroring, which starts at 15:00, from eighth place.
