There is no reason to panic over the spread of monkeypox, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), even though Sweden announced last week the first confirmed outbreak of the Clade Ib virus variant of the disease, also known as Mpox, outside of Africa.
Hans Kluge, the regional director of the UN organization, drew attention on Tuesday to the fact that the virus has been present on the European continent since its last outbreak in 2022, namely in the form of the Klade II variant. As he said, around a hundred infected people are currently being registered every week.
“Mpox is not another Covid, we know how to keep monkeypox under control,” Kluge said at his Geneva press conference via video link.
He recalled that two years ago, the spread of the virus in Europe was curbed, among other things, by carefully monitoring new infections, by having vaccine available, and by directly involving the most vulnerable social groups in the preventive measures.
because according to experts, this variant can cause a more contagious and serious disease than the previously known ones.
However, Hans Kluge has now emphasized that they know of only one imported case in Europe, and that the Klade II version is still dominant on the continent.
